Ascending the steep and difficult path winding path, I finally reached the opposite cliff face after having passed through spectacular forests, bushland and a river which wound its way through a tapestry of grassland, disappearing into the horizon. Continuing along the cliff, the route eventually plateaued and evolved into coastal headland. I stopped in awe at the majestic scenery. Windswept plains eventually gave way to steep cliffs, comprising colossal stacks and boulders of weathered red granite, that plunged into the vast ocean depths. Massive waves fanned out across the ocean, as far as the eye could see, while the chorus of winds heralded the gathering of storm clouds, wove a majestic tapestry magnificent to behold. I looked out past the forested cliff to the seacoast and vast mysterious ocean. Standing upright, the wind buffeted me wildly wrapping around my body in a rough embrace. I cried out in exhilaration, rejoicing at the beauty of Creation, outstanding beautiful and awesome to behold. I thought “It’s great to be alive”.
Walking along the cliff edge that comprised the western aspect of this rugged windswept cape, I gazed out across the ocean towards two lone islets. The waves seemed to relentlessly pound against their shores and curtains of sea water were swept up and caught in a tumultuous dance by the turbulent winds. I gazed out across the beautiful peninsula, comprising a mosaic of coastal bush, grass, rocks and dominated by a simple sandstone lighthouse. After long moments looking out towards the ocean I continued along the wooden bridge that wound its way along the cliff edge steadily descending, while bracing against gale force winds. I laughed with joy as I reminisced about my wonderful experience in the Shetland Islands. Eventually negotiating a sharp corner I suddenly stopped. I stood in awe, transfixed at the huge and vast cavern before me, bathed in the golden splendour of sunrise that opened up into the ocean. Violent winds sent mists of sea-spray like curtains of rainfall. The sight was truly magnificent to behold.
Walking along the secluded beach, I followed a stream of fast flowing water that was creating a meandering path through the sand on its way towards the ocean. The walk along the coast passes through some diverse and stunning landscape, before opening up into amazing sea cliffs and coastline. Descending down from the sea cliffs, I passed some beautiful rock formations before reaching an expanse of fine sand eventually leading to this secluded oasis. The red tinge of the rock formations contrasted strikingly against the fine yellow sand and blue sky manifested a beautiful contrast. The boulders themselves formed a maze of passages that produced some fun moments of exploration reminding one of childhood memories. These majestic granite formations often projected into the sea rising above the water to form outcrops or islands. Walking upon the fine quartz sand I smiled at the squeaking sound beneath my feet that permeated the air, reminiscent but not in the mythical proportions that I had envisaged from my childhood.
Walking along the isolated beach, I couldn’t help but admire the simple creative beauty of nature. As I cast my eyes along the sand lining the seashore, occasionally lapped by the rhythmic movement of gentle water, I admired the beautifully coloured rocks everywhere to be seen. A myriad of earthen coloured weaving a natural rich and vibrant tapestry made me pause on occasion, reminiscing childhood moments where excitement was to be found in the most simple of things. I fleetingly yearned for those moments of innocence and wonder at what the world had to offer. Eventually walking along the seashore, I climbed an apparently barren gigantic rock formation keen to once again ignite that childlike reckless spirit of adventure. As I bounded up the last few steps leading to the summit I looked out yonder, mesmerised in pure joy at what lay before me.
My footprints stood out starkly against the fine grains of yellow sand that lined the shore. Walking in silence, I paused by a group of red earthen coloured rocks spread out across the water, and looked out towards the horizon. The sound of a lone seagull drifting upon the gentle wind caressing my face, mingled with the waves surging and breaking against the rocks, were my lone companions. Climbing a boulder I steadied myself and looked afar in awe. A mosaic of pure beauty, both serene and mysterious was everywhere to behold. The brilliance of the sun’s rays burst from Heaven, casting its rays upon the Earth, illuminating it with a gentle radiance. For long moments I stood upon that boulder, a lone figure still and silent. It was as if I wanted to capture the experience of this moment for all time and engrave it within the depths of my heart.
Solemnly approaching the cliff edge, I was acutely aware of my insignificance as I peered out from the cliff face out towards the vast expanse of Heaven and Ocean. The gentle wind and sound of waves breaking were my only companions. There are times when words can not delve into the depths of one’s heart and soul. Somehow Dostoyevsky’s words “Beauty will save the World”, reflecting a loving God as manifested in the majestic beauty and gift of Creation resonated with vivid clarity. The calmness of the ocean, seemed to reflect the peace and serenity in one’s life, contrasted sharply with the turbulent clouds representing life’s many challenges and tribulations that one experiences in the deep valley of our struggles. Our lives at times seem vulnerable, an isolated island within a vast Ocean of despair. Nevertheless, the light piercing the clouds and illuminating Creation is the unconditional, unwavering love and mercy of Christ, walking with us amidst the storm, truly beautiful to behold. Words dear to me echoed within the depths of my heart.
“I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
Alone, perched upon a rock I lay still. The serenity that filled my mind soothed my thoughts, easing the burdens of life that occasionally threaten to engulf one. Surrounded by beauty of such magnificence, I became aware of my own insignificance, a lone figure, standing at the edge of the world looking out towards vast Heaven and Earth. In silence, permeated by the gentle winds and sound of water breaking I lay still in contemplation. As the sun waned, its glory shone ever so brightly, casting forth its magnificent rays, illuminating and penetrating the depths of my heart. I dared to pause and glimpse the immense beauty of Creation, a gift so beautiful that my soul stirred with immense joy, rejoicing in His presence.
“The heavens declare the glory of God;
And the firmament shows His handiwork.”
