“I stood in reverent awe and silence”

Photography memoirs

Wandering about the clifftops of Santorini, I was awestruck at the serene, pervasive beauty. Gazing out into the vast ocean, I suddenly noticed a lady sweeping the surrounds of a nearby church. We looked at each other; I was struck by the warmth and sadness of her eyes. We spoke to one another freely, sensing a kindred spirit. After a heartfelt conversation, she invited me into the church entrusted to her to look after, a task she lovingly carried out.

Stepping into the church, I slowly walked inside. As I crossed myself, I looked towards the ceiling where the light illuminated the majestic icon of Christ Jesus. I stood in reverent awe and silence. Within the depths of my heart Christ’s words resonated with a power and beauty that stirred my soul.

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12

“I dared to pause in silence…”

The natural beauty of Santorini where heaven and earth converge, complement the simplistic, creative elegance of mankind. Amidst the serenity and profound beauty, I dared to pause in silence. The psalmists words pierced my soul.

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10)

“The precious jewels in our lives are wrought not of metal and stone”

The precious jewels in our lives are wrought not of metal and stone, but forged from our life’s journey, of the people whom we have had the courage to show compassion, for love of our fellow neighbour is that which remains eternal.

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;  but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matthew 6:19-20)
